Roadside Scenes New Jerseys Scenic Byways Day 2
As we continue our exploration of New Jersey's scenic byways designated by the New Jersey Department of Transportation, NJM recommends checking out the following on the second leg of your scenic byway journey:
- History meets modern day on the 24-mile Upper Freehold Historic Farmland Byway in Monmouth County. Colonial towns, such as Upper Freehold and Allentown, still exhibit the unique agricultural, historical, environmental and cultural traditions along this picturesque.
- Distinct and historical landscapes abound along the 122-mile Bayshore Heritage Byway, which runs through southern New Jersey's "western shore" in Salem, Cumberland and Cape May counties. With views of the Delaware River and Delaware Bay, this byway tells the story of communities and cultures that were once dependent on the area's natural resources.
- First used by colonists in the 1700s, Pine Barrens Byway runs through the 1.1-million-acre Pinelands, the largest body of primarily forested space on the Mid-Atlantic seaboard between Richmond, Va. and Boston, Mass. The byway offers travelers unique views of the Pineland's pristine and protected estuary, coastal marshes, plants and animals, two federally designated wild and scenic rivers, state and national forests, wildlife management areas, recreational opportunities, and a federally administered preserve and research center.
