Playing Under Pressure

Pressure comes in many forms on the golf course. An opening tee shot with new clients, playing an approach shot over water, or putting to win your league championship are scenarios in which players (of all levels) encounter pressure. Here are few tips to help you manage those situations.

Slow down, don’t rush

Players tend to speed up in pressure situations — walking, talking, and pre–shot routine. This can lead to tension, disrupted rhythm in your swing, and poor decision making. Remind yourself to slow down when you’re facing a shot under pressure. Take deep breaths, walk slowly to your ball, take your time getting into your setup, and consider using positive self–talk in a deliberate, monotone voice.

Trust your pre–shot routine

Following a pre–shot routine provides physical and mental benefits. Repeating the same routine tells your body you’re ready to execute the shot. It also tells your mind that you’re about to hit an ordinary shot — just like the rest. The stakes may be higher under pressure, but the execution is the same.

Stay tension free

Tension in your hands and wrists can reduce clubhead speed and disrupt rhythm. It can also alter the path of your putting stroke. Check your grip pressure to make sure your hands are holding the club firmly, but not too tight. For measure, increase your grip pressure holding the club and then relax your hands and fingers.

Try to maintain soft wrists (not rigid) during the golf swing. Your wrist action will vary depending on your personal putting stroke.

Positive visualization

Picture the shot you want to hit when playing under pressure. Run it through your mind a few times so your objective is to hit a successful shot. “Avoiding a bad shot” is not an approach that produces optimal results.

Too often, players visualize the shot they don’t want to hit — a slice, hook, push or pulled putt. This can create tension and lead to a “hopeful” stroke, rather than one delivered with conviction.

Pressure situations are opportunities for greatness

Every round has its share of high–pressure shots. Each of those shots provides an opportunity to experience something spectacular on the golf course. When you approach pressure shots with eagerness, there’s a greater chance of success.
