7 Things to Do in Ridgefield, Connecticut

English colonists founded Ridgefield more than three centuries ago and the town has come a long way from its farming roots. Today, it offers a bustling Main Street, picturesque parks, and a thriving arts and cultural community. Here are eight attractions to check out when visiting.

ACT of Connecticut

This intimate theater has presented Broadway–caliber productions such as ”Evita,” “Mamma Mia,” and “Little Shops of Horrors,” as well as original plays. Actors from the Great White Way often collaborate with local talent.

Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum

In operation for six decades, the charming venue features a fresh perspective of contemporary works from emerging artists with an evolving collection.

Keeler Tavern Museum and History Center

Famed architect Cass Gilbert called this building — which predates the Revolutionary War — home in the early 20th century. Take a tour through time with guides dressed in period costumes and see artifacts and furnishings from the 1770s to the 20th century.

Ridgefield Playhouse

This cozy 500–seat theater situated in the auditorium of the town’s former high school offers great sight lines. Familiar rock and comic stars often are on the bill. There are also retrospective senior movie nights.

Ridgefield Theater Barn

This converted dairy barn has been the home to amateur and community theater for children and adults alike for six decades. You can even bring food and drink and watch in a cheerful cabaret setting.

Seth Low Pierrepont State Park

A soothing respite from the daily grind at one of the more secluded and tranquil parks in the state, just minutes from the center of town. More than 300 acres of trails, forests, and ponds. Picnickers are welcome.

Weir Farm National Historic Site

The former home of painter Julian Alden Weir, called the father of impressionism and a member of “The Ten,” a group of alternative–minded artists. It is one of only two art–related National Parks in the country. See the studios where famous artists worked, view the sculptured garden, walk the trails, and then break out a picnic lunch.
